Restoration of the Cast Iron Cross

The cast iron cross near the Church of St. James the Greater (a National Cultural Monument) is located in Jihlava on Jakubské Square by the western exterior wall of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and is part of the heritage reserve.

The object is in a state of disrepair. The stone is heavily polluted with minor material losses and cracks, and the jointing is outdated. The foundation of the object is inadequate, causing the entire cross to lean to the right. The cast iron and metal parts locally show signs of severe corrosion with layers of peeling paint. The base is severely damaged due to inappropriate internal brick masonry. The cast iron cross is also mechanically damaged. In the area of the base, it is torn and temporarily clamped with a steel clamp. In the middle of the cross, there are signs of modern welds and local reinforcement. The back side that closes the cross is missing. The gilded elements of Christ's body and the inscription ribbons are locally damaged by penetrating corrosion. The metal fence around the cross bears traces of mechanical damage and deformations, with some parts missing locally (tips of the rods and corner posts).

The restoration of the cross at Jakubské Square is a contribution to improving the cultural environment of the heritage reserve in the center of Jihlava.

The total cost of the project is 187,671 CZK
of which a subsidy from the Vysočina Fund amounts to 37.43%,
and private sources of the recipient amount to 62.57%.
The restoration was also supported by TRIMEX Jihlava, spol. s r.o., contributing 20,000 CZK.

Contractor: Marston-CZ s.r.o.
Implementation: May – September 2018.
